Secluded Sights at SFU

Here are some of the little-known sights at Simon Fraser University and in the forest of upper Burnaby Mountain. Each sight is rated on a seclusion scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the most secluded. The thumbnail images lead to larger images and more details about each sight.

The Blue Bug

Seclusion Level: 4
Description: A blue Volkswagen Beetle which was sent off the edge of the mountain years ago.

The Swings

Seclusion Level: 4
Description: Long-forgotten swings in the woods. This used to be a playground many years ago, but it's all overgrown now.

The Totem Poles

Seclusion Level: 5
Description: Believe it or not, these totem poles are in the forest, off the beaten track, and you'll have to bushwhack to find them!

The Boardwalk

Seclusion Level: 2
Description: A recently-built (summer, 2005) boardwalk crossing a stream by a pond.

The Climbing Rock

Seclusion Level: 5
Description: You can practice your bouldering skills on this little-known rock in the woods.

The Face on the Stump

Seclusion Level: 3
Description: Somebody carved a face on this tree stump. (No, it wasn't me.)

The Garden Path

Seclusion Level: 1
Description: A not-so-secluded garden path, but it was recently constructed (fall, 2005), so you may not have discovered it yet.

The Red Bug

Seclusion Level: 5
Description: A red Volkswagen Beetle which was sent off the edge of the mountain years ago.

The Pipeline Cut

Seclusion Level: 2
Description: This cut through the forest was made in the summer of 2005 in order to accomodate new water pipelines.
