SFU Film Makers Win Weekend Film Challenge

First prize winners from L: Karen Tanenbaum, Josh Tanenbaum, Kirsten Johnson, Brian Quan

The contest was organized by ArtsConnect, a non-profit society that promotes arts in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Anmore and Belcarra. The students were given an "inspiration package" consisting of the following:

Character: Radio Host/DJ; Location: Dead End or Abandoned Road; Prop: Takeout for Two box, containing a number of fortunes, mini-chopsticks, paper lanterns, and restaurant placemats with zodiac symbols on them; Phrase: The game takes over your life

Over the course of a single weekend – 48 hours - they had to create a five-minute film based on this.

Three SFU teams entered and two won. The film Takeout for Two won 1st place and Before the Bliss won 2nd place. Takeout for Two film-makers are SIAT students Kirsten Johnson, Josh and Karen Tanenbaum, Eddy Walters, Brian Quan, Navi Bala and Eduardo Noda. SIAT Lecturer Michael Filmowicz set a new personal record for mixing the short film in 15 minutes. Before the Bliss film-makers are Jason Boileau, Stephanie Cheung, Shantini Klaassen, Steven Krajnyak, Brett Statham, and Elmine Statham.

Take out For Two is about a Talk Radio host who finds himself trapped in an unending loop in time, doomed to relive the same moments over and over again, until he can learn to take his own advice. It was a complicated story to tell in five minutes. The end result is something the team is very happy with, and they are proud to put their names on. "The entire experience of making a film in 48 hours is intense, but we had a very dedicated and talented team who were willing to risk life and limb in the pursuit of our muse," says Josh Tanenbaum the film's director.
