Why applied sciences at SFU?

Another important question! There are many characteristics that make the Applied Sciences programs at SFU unique. One of the most important is that we take an interdisciplinary approach to education. Out there, in the real world, people are required to have the ability to think and act across disciplinary boundaries. They are expected to work well in groups, think "outside of the box", be creative, and, most importantly, to be able to look at issues critically and be innovative in their approach to problem solving.

These are the same outcomes you can expect as an Applied Sciences graduate. So why not model your education in a way that will truly prepare you for real life?

Speaking of real life, another great opportunity for SFU Applied Sciences students are our Cooperative Education Programs. Co-op gives students the opportunity to plug into 'career' type job opportunities while they are going to school. Our students have worked with companies in Canada, Japan, Germany, France, Hong Kong, Korea, China and the USA. Domestic and international placement of students is an ideal way to learn about the world and to develop long term professional connections with the business community. An added bonus is that students are paid professional wages. This goes a long way toward financing an education! All of our schools offer co-op. Take a look: Communication, Computing, Engineering, Interactive Arts and Technology, Kinesiology.

How do you get admitted?

There is a lot being done to ensure that you have the opportunity to study in Applied Sciences. We have increased the number of students admitted to our programs, we've now finished building the second of two new buildings (Technology and Science Complex), and we have simplified our admission requirements. Take a look at the new undergraduate direct admission requirements. If you are applying to SFU from college or university you can also find admission information here.

Who might you become with an Applied Sciences degree?

An applied science degree will open doors for you. In fact, the Faculty of Applied Sciences offers several different undergraduate degrees depending on the program you decide to study. You could choose Engineering Science for example, and get a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc), or complete Communication to earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA); Kinesiology for a Bachelor of Science (BSc Kinesiology); Computing Science gets you a BSc Computing; and there's also a Bachelor of General Studies (BGS Applied Sciences). Any of our degrees will give you an advantage when you are searching for your career jobs. Here are some examples of the types of careers you can pursue after an Applied Sciences program.
